On Thursday, October 27th, Saunders Student Council held a 80’s decade dance. The dance took place in the cafeteria and food was being sold by Saunders Student Council and volunteers in the hallway. Unlike other dances, this dance was held not to fundraise money, but to raise school spirit and bring students together. “It’s a great way to meet people and socialize and get involved in the school,” says grade 11 student Zakk Bawden.

Around 210 students came to dance. The funds raised were used to pay for the dance itself, and pay additional fees for student council. Grade 12 student and Student Council Co-Prime Minister Angelica Mensah explains, “…probably any other additional activities that we do where we don’t charge money like handing out halloween candy or during the holiday season, handing out candy canes things like that, that money would go to paying for those things.”

Even now, when we can have normal school extracurricular activities running, Covid-19 is still casting a shadow on how we plan and execute. Grade 11 student Bridget Kitching touched on this struggle when she commented, “…with the pandemic we haven’t been able to do these fun highschool things, so it's cool to go to dances and do all that kinda fun stuff.”

After almost 3 years of canceled clubs, events being rescheduled “until further notice”, and constant interaction solely online, it is extremely exciting to see the school community get together for nothing more than to meet other students and become a Saunders Sabre.
